A leaking pod is nearly always caused by pressure rather than a faulty pod. Anything that upsets the balance โ€” overfilling, heat, altitude, a hard draw โ€” pushes liquid the wrong way.

Why pods leak

A leaking pod is nearly always caused by pressure, not by a faulty pod. E-liquid sits against a coil with a small air path through it; anything that changes the pressure balance โ€” overfilling, heat, altitude, a hard draw โ€” pushes liquid the wrong way.

Five causes, in the order they actually happen.

1. It was overfilled

The most common by a distance. A pod needs an air gap above the liquid to regulate pressure. Fill it to the brim and there's nowhere for air to go, so liquid is forced through the coil and out of the airway.

Fix: fill to just below the max line, never to the top. Our guide on filling and priming a pod covers the technique.

2. The fill plug isn't fully seated

Silicone plugs look closed when they aren't. A plug sitting slightly proud lets air in from the wrong direction, and the pod weeps steadily into your pocket.

Fix: press until it sits flush with the pod body. You should feel it seat.

3. It's been stored on its side

Left horizontal, liquid works into the airway where it has no business being. You then get a mouthful on the next draw, or a slow leak from the base.

Fix: store the device upright. If it's already flooded, take the pod out, wipe the airway with a rolled tissue, and let it stand upright for ten minutes.

4. Heat or a change in altitude

Air expands. A device left in a hot car, in direct sun, or carried up a mountain pass will push liquid through the coil with no fault on anyone's part.

Fix: nothing is broken โ€” wipe it and carry on. Avoid leaving it on a dashboard.

5. Very hard draws

Pod systems are built for a gentle mouth-to-lung draw. Pulling hard like a cigarette floods the coil faster than it can vaporise, and the excess goes somewhere.

Fix: slower, softer, longer. It also tastes better and makes the coil last.

When the pod really is finished

Pods are consumable. The seals soften and the coil degrades, and past a certain point a pod leaks no matter what you do. If a pod leaks when a fresh one doesn't, you've found your answer.

Replacements: Pro II / Pro LITE refillable pods, AirsPops XL refillable pod, or the coil 2-pack if the pod body is still sound.

Cleaning up after a leak

  1. Take the pod out and wipe the battery's contacts dry โ€” liquid there causes misfires.
  2. Roll a tissue corner and pass it through the mouthpiece airway.
  3. Wipe the pod's outer seal.
  4. Stand everything upright for a few minutes before reassembling.

Don't rinse a pod under a tap. Water in the coil ruins it.

Common questions

Why does my vape pod keep leaking?

Almost always pressure rather than a faulty pod. Overfilling is the most common cause, followed by a fill plug that isn't fully seated, storing the device on its side, heat, and very hard draws.

How full should I fill a pod?

To just below the max line, never to the top. The pod needs an air gap to regulate pressure - without it, liquid is forced through the coil and out of the airway.

Can I wash a leaking pod?

No. Water in the coil ruins it. Wipe the outside and pass a rolled tissue corner through the airway instead, then stand it upright for a few minutes.

When should I replace a pod instead of cleaning it?

When a fresh pod doesn't leak in the same device. Pods are consumable - seals soften and coils degrade, and past a point a pod leaks whatever you do.
