Vape Not Charging? Try These First

Nine times out of ten a vape that won't charge is the cable or the port, not the device. Those cost nothing to rule out, so start there.

When a vape won't charge

Nine times out of ten it's the cable or the port, not the device. Test those first, because they cost nothing to rule out and they're the most common cause by a wide margin.

1. Try a different cable and a different port

USB-C cables fail constantly, and many charge-only cables carry too little current to be reliable. Swap the cable, then swap the wall plug or laptop port.

Use a normal phone charger or a laptop port — not a fast-charge brick. Small vape batteries have modest charging circuits, and a high-output charger can cause the device to refuse the charge entirely, or shorten the battery's life if it accepts it.

2. Clean the charging port

Pocket lint compacts into a USB-C port and stops the connector seating fully. It looks clean and isn't.

Switch the device off, and use a wooden toothpick or a dry brush to lift the lint out. Never anything metal, and never anything wet.

3. Give a fully drained battery time

A battery run completely flat can take several minutes on the charger before it shows any sign of life. If you plugged it in and saw nothing, leave it for fifteen minutes before deciding.

Worth avoiding in future: repeatedly running a small battery to zero measurably shortens its life. Charge when the draw weakens rather than when it dies.

4. Check whether it's too hot or too cold

Lithium batteries refuse to charge outside a safe temperature band. A device left in a hot car or brought in from real cold may simply decline until it returns to room temperature. That's the protection circuit doing its job.

5. Make sure it's meant to be charged at all

Smaller disposables have no charging port because the battery is sized to outlast the liquid. If there's no USB-C port, the device is finished rather than flat — see how to tell when a disposable is finished.

Never open a non-rechargeable device to charge the cell directly. There is no protection circuit in there, and lithium cells fail dangerously when abused.

If none of that works

A battery that won't take charge on a known-good cable, with a clean port, at room temperature, has reached the end of its life. Batteries are consumable — they degrade with every cycle.
